Smelter waste was a major issue for this EWS. Ammonia gas generation would kill off vegetation when they would try to vegetate. Overbuilt slopes (steep) Steep slopes made standard vegetated cap infeasible. The site, therefore, had on going erosion/ maintenance issues.
