Exxon Bayway Refinery Landfill Closure

The Exxon Bayway Refining Company (Exxon) site is situated on approximately 1,300 acres at 1400 Park Avenue, in the city of Linden in Union County, New Jersey. Exxon had been producing petroleum products at this facility since 1909. The site was sold to Tosco and subsequently to ConocoPhillips, which currently owns and operates the refinery. However, Exxon is still responsible for on-going remediation. The main part of the facility consists of a refinery, two chemical plants, tank fields and a distribution station. Land in the vicinity of the site is used for residential, commercial, and industrial purposes.

The ExxonMobil facility is an inactive 18-acre remediation industrial final closure cover system located in Lynden, NJ. The site is the first application in the state to use ClosureTurf® as an EPA Subtitle D compliant landfill closure system. The project was an unlined disposal site, ExxonMobil was faced with ground water contamination problems corrected through remedial activities and closing the landfill with a system to manage rainwater infiltration.

ClosureTurf® was selected as the long-term closure system to manage the rainfall infiltration, eliminate soil erosion, reduce post-closure maintenance costs, increase slope integrity, enhance landfill gas (LFG) management and accessibility for truck traffic to maintain and remove liquids from the monitoring well system for remedial leachate reduction.
