{"id":5841,"date":"2019-06-11T10:29:05","date_gmt":"2019-06-11T15:29:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/agruamerica.com\/?p=5841"},"modified":"2023-02-23T08:07:15","modified_gmt":"2023-02-23T14:07:15","slug":"hdpe-fittings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agruamerica.com\/es\/hdpe-fittings\/","title":{"rendered":"PVC vs. HDPE Fittings in Underground Construction"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sewer system operators\nand consulting engineers from around the United States surveyed showed that\nHDPE and PVC finished either #1 or #2 in most categories (<em>1<\/em>). Both types\nof pipe have their strengths and weaknesses and appeal to many contractors and\nproject owners due to their expansive reach in applications. The choice of pipe\nmaterial will often dictate the choice of fittings that will be used in a given\nproject. However, there are applications and situations that can take better\nadvantage of HDPE fittings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below, we examine the\ndifferences between polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE)\npipes, describe applications that are ideal for HDPE fittings, and review the\nbenefits of sourcing most HDPE pipe and fittings from the same material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do you compare PVC with\nHDPE? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When comparing PVC with\nHDPE it is first important to recognize that both materials demonstrate many\nadvantages over other, more traditional piping options made with concrete,\niron, steel, or copper. Most municipalities once depended on traditional piping\nmaterials for constructing water infrastructure, but that has changed as\nalternatives became available. Traditional piping materials have also been\nassociated with problems that stem from leaky pipe joints, damage to the pipe\ndue to corrosion, and general wear and tear. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thermoplastics like PVC\nand HDPE, on the other hand, offer significantly higher service life when\ncompared with traditional piping materials. They are also less dense and\ntherefore lighter and cheaper to transport. PVC and HDPE also demonstrate high\ntensile strength and are highly resistant to electrochemical-based corrosion. While\nboth thermoplastics show many similarities, there are some key differences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PVC has been described\nas a stiffer and stronger material, which carries positives as well as\ndrawbacks. A key positive is that less PVC material is needed than HDPE to\ncreate pressure pipes at the target pressure levels. Because of its stiffness\nand strength, PVC can connect directly to mechanical valves, non-plastic\nfittings, and many types of connections. However, its lack of flexibility means\nthat PVC requires a longer bending radii than HDPE pipes.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HDPE\nis known for its high strength-to-density ratio, flexibility, and chemical\nstability making a strong choice for both pressure and non-pressure piping\napplications. While it does require more material to achieve the same pressure rating\nas a PVC pipe, HDPE offers a distinct advantage in having several means of achieving\na leak-free system via heat fusion joints and through the use of specialized\nfittings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The advantages of HDPE\nfittings and connections<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest\nproblems with mechanically joined traditional pipes is the high incidence of\nbackground leakage\u2014water that leaks out of the pipe through pipe joints. It is\nestimated that in the United States, about 14% of drinking water is lost each\nday due to background leakage, which represents more than 12 million gallons of\nwater a year in a city of 100,000 (<em>3<\/em>). HDPE pipes, and their associated\nfittings and connections, offer a distinct advantage in that they can be used\nto create leak-free joints that prevent background leakage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The transition fitting,\nfor instance, is a permanent factory-made joint that connects HDPE pipe to any\nother pipe material. The joint is secured with an O-ring sealed,\ncircumferential compressive fit of the HDPE pipe around or into the other pipe\nmaterial. The transition fitting allows for the HDPE pipe to connect to steel\npipe, ductile-iron pipe, PVC pipe, and more. Modern options that take advantage\nof fusion welding also exist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The traditional approach\ncalls for butt-fused welding, which creates a fusion joint that is leak-free\nand as strong as the pipe. During repairs or special service that requires a\nmodification to the pipe that is not easily accessible, installers can use an\nelectrofusion coupler to join the new pipe and fittings. Electrofusion is a\ncomputerized fusion process that eliminated most of the potential for human\nerror while requiring a smaller access point for assembly.&nbsp; Fusion offers a means of joining the HDPE\npiping components and creating one homogenous, leak free system. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many more\ntypes of fittings and connections for HDPE pipes, which is partly as a result\nof its greater flexibility when compared with PVC and traditional piping\nmaterials. While the lack of stiffness means that HDPE pipes can be transported\nand installed easier, it also means that special fittings are sometimes\nrequired to connect the pipe to various components. To overcome this\ndisadvantage, installers should consider sourcing their pipes and fittings of the\nsame material. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HDPE pipes and fittings<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest\nadvantages of sourcing your pipes and fittings from the same material is that\nyou ensure optimal interoperability and minimize the risk of time-wasting modifications\nto accommodate for any differences between products. Some manufacturers go a\nstep further by providing training and specialized equipment to work with their\nproducts. AGRU America, for instance, is an exclusive distributor of the H\u00dcRNER\nline of electrofusion welders and offers training for installers looking to use\nthe equipment for AGRU\u2019s electrofusion couplers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AGRU also manufacturers\nthe largest HDPE diameter pipes and fittings in North America. These AGRU large-diameter, or\nXXL, HDPE pipes are sized between 24 IPS and 63 IPS OD and 1600 mm &nbsp;to 3260 mm OD. Such supersized pipes are\nespecially useful in creating the primary intake system for desalination plants\nor constructing the outfall pipe of a wastewater treatment facility.
